Before your operation

What happens at the first clinic visit?
You will be sent an assessment form that you complete before you come to clinic. This will highlight all the necessary medical, social problems and allow us to have a good idea whether surgery can help you. This will give us more time to discuss the operations and important matters you want to discuss. Depending on your health and fitness you may also be referred to see a specialist physician for assessment.

What is involved in preparing for the surgery?
Once we decided to have surgery we will arrange for a series of blood tests to exclude any medical cause for obesity. ECG to check your heart. Depending on whether the assessment form reveals signs of possible hiatus hernia or sleep apnoea, you may also need a gastroscopy to look in your stomach or sleep studies. Our dietician will see you about two weeks before the operation and prepare you with the dietary changes you need to make after the operation as well as the special diet you need to go on before the operation.

Will I need any preoperative tests?
All patients will be screened for a number of conditions like hiatus hernia, sleep apnoea. Depending on the results of these some may require a gastroscopy or sleep studies before surgery. All patients will have standard blood tests before surgery.

How long should I expect to be in the hospital?
You will arrive at the hospital on the morning of your surgery. Usually one night stay for gastric band and two nights for gastric bypass.

Do I need to have a special diet before the operation?
Yes. You will need to go on a liver shrinking diet that you need to follow 7-10 days before the operation. This is important, as it will make the operation easier and safer for you.

I have lost weight on this liver diet, can I just stay on this diet?
No. The diet is designed for short-term use and can be dangerous if used for more than 2 weeks. You are expected to lose up to a stone in weight with this diet. Eighty percent of the weight you lose is water. If you stop the diet you will put it all back on within days.
