Is Surgery for me?

Why consider surgery over dieting and drug treatment for obesity? As many will confess to having some success in losing weight with dieting and exercises, many will also admit that the weight loss was often short lived and in the majority of people they regain and even surpass their previous weight. Surgery has been shown to produce 50% to 75% of excess weight* loss but unlike dieting and drug therapy surgery is the only treatment that has shown to maintain the weight loss long term.

Not every overweight person needs surgery and at the moment we are offering surgery to people
1. who are generally well, aged over 18 years
2. Your BMI is greater than 40 or you have a BMI greater than 35 with obesity–related disease*.
3. You must have tried other weight loss treatments (eg. dieting, exercises) without permanent success.
4. There must be no medical or psychological reason for the obesity.
5. You must understand the procedure, the lifestyle changes it will produce and most important of all you must be motivated.
(NICE guidelines)

Insertion of a gastric balloon is suitable for those who have a BMI above 30 (above 27 with obesity-related disease). It is particularly useful in those whose BMI are between 35 and 39 without obesity-related disease that do not qualify for or do not want surgery but wants to have a more definitive treatment. It is also used as an aid to lose weight before operation in those who are very very obese (BMI>60) or who are too high risk for immediate surgery.
